They Thought They Were Going to Emmaus
They thought they were going to Emmaus.
Preoccupied, as they were, with what lay behind,
They could not see The Way
Even as He walked alongside them.
They thought they were talking about recent events.
Preoccupied, as they were, with their own experience,
They could not see The Truth
Until He put the ancient story together for them.
They thought the stranger was going farther.
Preoccupied, as they were, with the lateness of the hour,
They could not see that The Life
Had no intention of leaving them.
They thought they were sharing a meal together.
Preoccupied, as they were, by the ordinariness of the bread,
They could not see Jesus
Until He broke His body before them once again.
They thought they were going to Emmaus.
They ended up in a whole new world of understanding.
